Thinking Outside the Box

Ever wonder why some cities seem to become magnets for business and economic development? Here are three simple reasons why.

1. Leadership

Everything rises and falls on leadership. Families, businesses, communities and countries will prosper or suffer decline because of their leaders. Don’t blame misfortune, your neighborhood, the press or happenings beyond your control when choices and inspiration make all the difference. Ronald Reagan was an example of an inspiring leader who challenged the status quo and won on a grand scale.

2. Keeping an Open Mind

Naysayers never make it to first base. Those who say, “It’s always been done this way” or “It’s beyond my control” never see the limitless possibilities and opportunities that are out there on the horizon.

3. Having a “Can Do” Attitude

Attitude is everything. In the stuggle for our country’s independence, did victory triumph over defeat by maintaining the status quo? No, some rag-tag and disadvantaged countrymen had a “can-do” attitude. In my early college years I read, over and over, a powerful book by Clement Stone, “The Success System That Never Fails”. His thesis was that sales are contingent on the attitude of the salesman, not the attitude of the prospect. Attitude unlocks the door to success in every area of life.

What will make the city of Port Angeles thrive again? Will business as usual lead us out of our current dilemma into a prosperous and glorious future? In this new economy cities must think outside the box. They must retool and adapt to new opportunities as they come along or else they will become the rust buckets or ghost towns of tomorrow.
